The history of Tapas
If you do not know what a “tapa” is, in Spain we call “tapa” a small food plate that is used as a side with a drink, usually wine. There are many beliefs about where this name comes from, all of them curious in their own way.

Some say that it was the Spanish King Alfonso X “the wise” the one that ordered Spanish pubs to put a piece of food on top of a glass of wine –usually ham or cheese- in order to cover it from dirt or dust. In Spanish, the verb to cover is “tapar” therefore calling “tapa” the food that covers (tapa) the drink.

Others say that it was the king Alfonso XIII who, to avoid drunkenness of his citizens and to prevent accidents, established a law that forced every pub to serve a little piece of food with the alcoholic drinks –again, usually wine- This way, the drunkenness was “covered” (tapa) by the food.
